Essential oils are highly concentrated  oils that are extracted from  various plants. They  have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. Because of their detoxifying, antibacterial, antiviral and calming properties, essential oils are recently gaining popularity as a natural, safe and cost-effective therapy for a number of health concerns.

Most people with acne turn to harsh chemical based products to clear their skin, but essentials oils are just as effective.Though they work slowly as compared to other acne treatment products, they are more effective and have no side effects.

The following are the best oils to treat and manage acne:

  • Tea Tree oil

Tea Tree Oil is known to have anti fungal and antiseptic properties, and has been used for many years to help clear skin of acne. Various studies have demonstrated that a 5% tea tree oil gel was just as effective as a 5% benzoyl peroxide lotion in the treatment of acne. Though the tea tree oil worked more slowly to clear acne, it produced fewer side effects.

  •    Sandalwood essential oil

It has been shown to inhibit  the growth of a type of bacteria that is commonly a cause of acne. Farnesol, a component of sandalwood essential oil has  high antibacterial and anti fungal activity.

With antimicrobial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, it’s an incredible natural remedy for cystic outbreaks. It works by  drying out the affected area and also kills  the bacteria that causes inflammation.  It has proven to be highly effective for oily skin that’s prone to cysts and boils.

This is one of the most  gentle oil hence  making it a great option for most skin types. It can naturally heal wounds and scars, so it’s ideal for repairing pimples that have been popped. It'll also provide relief from dry, irritated skin, so if you use clay masks, it's a great choice for balancing oil production and reducing inflammation.

Tips on Using Essential Oils.

  • Due to the concentrated nature of essential oils, its important that you dilute it before use by adding  a carrier oil such as olive, coconut or jojoba .
  • Be sure to avoid getting essential oils in or near the eyes.
  • There is always the potential of becoming sensitive to specific essential oils, so it’s wise to rotate use of different types of essential oils, rather than using the same essential oils over and over.
  • Always do a patch test before applying anything to larger areas of your skin.
  • Many essential oils are toxic and shouldn’t be taken by mouth unless under the specific care of a healthcare professional.
  • Buy “pure” essential oils. There are all kinds of  fake versions so be sure to educate yourself first before buying any brand of essential oils

You can make your own aromatherapy acne wash by adding up to 5% of any of the essential oils mentioned above to unscented face or body wash. For an aromatherapy acne gel, use pure aloe vera gel as a base, and add up to 5% of the essential oils mentioned above.
