Laser Resurfacing for Acne Scars

Laser Resurfacing for Acne Scars

You are feeling good about yourself now that all your acne is gone, but you have been left with unsightly scars that just dont fade no matter what creams or lotions you use.If you have been left with excessive scarring caused by acne, laser resurfacing can help you minimize and eliminate these scars quickly and for good.

Laser therapy is an appealing treatment for acne: no messy creams, no drugs and minimal risk of side effects. It is simply a corrective surgical procedure conducted  by a doctor or a professional dermatologist. Using a laser, the top layer of the skin is removed layer by layer revealing a clean , fresh layer without scars. This is similar to laser eye surgery, where one thin layer of damaged tissue is removed so that a new, untouched layer is exposed, instantly correcting and removing any scarring or damage.

Most acne blemish laser treatment methods are painless and effective, but they also come at a noticeable price. A successful acne blemish laser treatment may include various types of laser exposure such as carbon dioxide lasers or non ablative lasers and also several sessions to completely remove the scars. This pushes up the costs.

However,as with most treatment, laser resurfacing can cause various side effects, including:

  • Redness, swelling and itching. After ablative laser resurfacing, treated skin will be itchy, swollen and red. Redness — the degree of which is related to the depth of resurfacing done — can be intense and might last for several months. The aggravation of a previously existing skin condition, such as rosacea, can contribute to redness.
  • Acne. Applying prescribed thick creams and bandages to your face after treatment can worsen acne or cause you to temporarily develop tiny white pimples on treated skin.
  • Infection. Ablative laser resurfacing can lead to a bacterial, viral or fungal infection. The most common infection is a flare-up of the herpes virus — the virus that causes cold sores. In most cases, the herpes virus is already present but dormant in the skin.
  • Changes in skin color. Ablative laser resurfacing can cause treated skin to become darker than normal  or lighter than normal . Hyperpigmentation is more common in people who have darker skin. Topical retinal acid or glycolic acid can help treat hyper pigmentation after the treated area has healed. Use of sunscreen during the healing process is  also  important.

Laser Re-surfacing can be very expensive however it is a sure-fire method of permanently removing scarring caused by extreme acne.If you feel that your scars might need something more long term, then start saving for acne scar laser treatment. The only known treatment that has worked in acne scar removal is acne scar laser treatment. It is also commonly used for the treatment of red acne scars, stretch marks and keloids.
