How to get rid of large pores

Pores are the small openings on our skin ,they are also known as hair follicles. There are two types of skin pores, sweat pores that lets out sweat in order to keep us cool and oil pores that brings sebum(skins natural oil) to the surface so as to moisturize our skin.

Most people with oily skin  suffer from large, visible pores which makes them quite conscious of their looks. What causes large pores? Oily skin is one of the major causes ,as excess  sebum sits around the pores making them appear enlarged.Aging and sun damage also causes the skin to thicken as cells build up around the pores. Biologically, men have larger pores as compared to women, however hormonal changes in women such as pregnancy and puberty can lead to an increase in the appearance of large pores.

Its important to note that you cannot change the size of your pore but there are ways that you can minimize their appearance , so be wary of products that claim to eliminate large pores.

How to minimize Large Pores

Use Clay Masks

Clay draws out oil from your pores giving you a smooth clean feel. It also helps regulate oil production when used regularly. Choose a pure clay mask  -bentonite or kaolin which are good for fighting acne.Note that over using clay masks may lead to dry skin so limit use to twice a week.

Exfoliate Often

You can use store bought scrubs or make your own at home .Examples of natural homemade scrubs include;Brown sugar+ honey scrub, sea salt + coconut oil scrub, oatmeal +milk scrub or lemon +sugar scrub. Be gentle while exfoliating  to avoid breaking your skin.Redness, irritation, excessive dryness and flaking skin are all signs of over exfoliation.

Use Toners

Toners tighten the skin and are effective in minimizing the appearance of large pores.Look for gentle non-alcohol based toners .

Moisturize

A good moisturizer creates a barrier between your pores and unwanted oil and dirt.Choose a Non-comedogenic light moisturizers if you have oily skin.

Use Retinoids and Vitamin C

Retinol, retinoids and vitamin C are highly effective in the management of large pores and generally oily skin problems. However for best results use serums which have pure concentrations of these powerful ingredients. For these serums to be effective, they should have a minimum content of 2.5% of retinol and 20% for Vitamin C. Yes, they are quite expensive but they DO work.

Use a Primer

If you use make up, a primeris a must have. Applied before foundation, a primer gives you a smooth and even canvas such that your pores and other blemishes are covered, giving your foundation and make up a flawless finish.
